אומרים שאסמרה, בירת אריתראה, שימשה כתחנת מעבר במסעותיה של מלכת שבא לשלמה המלך. העיר שבה חיים היום כ-650,000 תושבים, נתפסת על ידי רבים בקהילת האדריכלות הבינלאומית כבירת המודרניזם של אפריקה, שבמרכזה נוצצת תחנת דלק בצורת אוירון פרוש-כנפיים, שנבנתה בשנת 1938.
כקולוניה איטלקית בתקופה הפשיסטית, שכונתה ״רומא הקטנה״, בירת האימפריה האיטלקית באפריקה, שימשה אסמרה מעבדה אדריכלית של הזרם הרציונליסטי-פוטוריסטי במודרניזם האיטלקי, ובדומה לתל-אביב, הוכרזה ב-2017 על ידי ארגון החינוך, תרבות ומדע של האו״ם כאתר מורשת עולמי מודרני.
1:1 שמחו לארח הרצאה בסדרת הערים השכנות ״סליחה, איך מגיעים ל..״, של האדריכל ד״ר ירמי הופמן, מנהל מחלקת השימור בעיריית ת״א-יפו, אשר השתתף בהליך ההכרזה של העיר אסמרה כאתר מורשת עולמי מודרני מטעם אונסק״ו. בערב המיוחד הוא הציג תמונות וסיפר על העיר התאומה אסמרה, בירתם של רבים ממבקשי המקלט הגרים בישראל, על בנייני המופת והסגנונות האדריכליים השונים שבה.

It is said that Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, was a stop on Queen Sheba's journeys to visit King Solomon. The city of 650,000 inhabitants is considered today by many in the international Architecture community as Africa's capital of modernism, with the spectacular 1938 Fiat Tagliero, an aeroplane-shaped service station, in its midst.
An Italian colony during the Fascist period, dubbed "Piccola Roma", the capital of the Italian Empire in Africa served as an architectural laboratory for the Rationalist-Futurist current of Italian Modernism, and following Tel-Aviv, was proclaimed in 2017 by UNESCO as a modern World Heritage Site of outstanding universal value.
1:1 was happy to host another evening in the series of neighbour cities "Excuse me, how do I get to..": Dr. Arch. Jeremie Hoffmann, Director of the Conservation Department in the Tel-Aviv-Jaffa Municipality, took part on behalf of UNESCO in the process of inscribing the city of Asmara as a modern World Heritage Site. In this special evening, Dr. Hoffmann showed pictures and told about the twin city of Asmara, with its architectural masterpieces and several building styles, capital city to many of the asylum seekers residing in Tel-Aviv presently.
