The exhibition presented before the Israeli public a selection of video works by artists from the Arab world, works in circulation all around the world that have never before been exhibited in Israel. The exhibition shone a light onto a dark absence, a gaping hole in the contemporary artistic and cultural landscapes of Israel. By delineating these political and geographic boundaries we wished to call attention to Israel’s exclusion from the Middle East family.

 

We were showing the works in the exhibition in Israel without the artists' knowledge or consent, acutely aware of this act of expropriation. Through this exhibition we wished to promote a shared reality marked by open dialogue and exchange throughout the Middle East, without wars, occupation, or any borders. In staging this exhibition, we were manifesting what we wish for and believe to be right. We chose not to publish the artists’ names, on the assumption that they would not want for their work to be shown in Israel, as part of the Arab and International Cultural Boycott of Israel, and with the aim of not foisting an undesired cooperation upon them, so as to shield them from criticism and accusations of treason in their countries of origin.

 

1:1 was happy to open its first exhibition season in this manner, against the status quo. Out of faith in the ability of art to broaden horizons, change world views, and lead to social and political change. Toward freedom and democracy between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea, and across the entire world. Art is often required to transgress moral, legal and normative boundaries in order to lead the direction forward.

يُقدم المعرض للجمهور الإسرائيلي مجموعة مختارة من أعمال الفيديو لفنّانين من العالم العربي والمعروضة في أرجاء العالم لكنها لم تُعرض في إسرائيل بعد. يلقي هذا المعرض الضوء على العالم الفنّيّ في الدول العربية المجاورة، الغائب والمخفي عن المشهد الفنّيّ والثقافيّ المعاصر في إسرائيل. تسعى الإشارة إلى الحدود السياسيّة والجغرافيّة إلى لفت الأنظار إلى مكانة إسرائيل الشاذة في أسرة الشرق الأوسط.

تُعرض هذه الأعمال في إسرائيل دون عِلم الفنّانين، ومن خلال الإدراك الكامل لعملية سلب ممتلكاتهم هذه. فبواسطة هذه المعرض نسعى إلى تعزيز واقع من التعاون والحوار في الشرق الأوسط، واقع بدون حروب واحتلال، عالم بدون حدود؛ الواقع الصحيح المرغوب بنظرنا. لقد اخترنا عدم نشر أسماء الفنّانين لعلمنا بعدم رغبتهم بعرض أعمالهم في إسرائيل كجزء من المقاطعة الثقافية العربية والعالمية لدولة إسرائيل، وكي لا نفرض عليهم تعاونًا لا يرغبون به، وبهدف عدم تعريضهم لسيف الانتقاد واتهامات الخيانة.

 

1:1 يسعدنا افتتاح موسم معارضنا الأول بصيغته هذه احتجاجًا على الوضع الراهن، ومن خلال الإيمان بقدرة الفن على توسيع الآفاق، وتغيير وجهات النظر، وإحداث التغيير الاجتماعي والسياسي، وسعيًا إلى الحربة والديمقراطية في المنطقة بين النهر والبحر، وفي العالم كله. غالبًا من يتطلب من الفن تخطي الحدود الأخلاقية والقانونية والمعيارية بغية التقدم إلى الأمام.
